Air bricks, check they’re functional!

Oct 2020

Damaged air bricks

Older style damaged air bricks allow rodents to squeeze through gaps as well as easily damaged new plastic bricks.
Take a look at this post discussing plastic versions as well as the effect rodents can have on them.

Air bricks are often made up of a mesh or grille covering a hole, allowing air circulation in your home. They also reduce unpleasant odors, improving air quality and reduce the growth of mold. These bricks are often laid at low level to allow the maximum coverage of air distribution even under the flooring, as such reducing decay and maintaining the structural integrity.

Example of a clay air brick

Case Study, Poole

Rats were gaining access through an old cast metal air brick at our customer’s property in Poole, Dorset. To stop any unwanted visitors from gaining entry we replaced this with a clay air brick with tighter vents and cemented it in place!

Here’s a quick before and after of the Poole properties replacement, very satisfying!

Not only allowing rodents to roam free in your house, damaged air bricks could lead to mold and fungus. This could lead to damaged flooring and walls leading to structural instability. In order to prevent this, it’s important to check on any air bricks you have and follow some simple steps to keep them functioning;

Keep the air brick clean to allow for the air to travel back and forth.
Give the brick some space to ensure the wind can reach the brick.
Try to minimize on the brick being knocked by using a cover or grille.
So if you find your brick is damaged, give us a call and we will fix or replace the brick for you.
